How we approach security

Almost nothing that hits a small business is sophisticated. It's a convincing email, a password reused from somewhere that got breached, or a machine that missed six months of updates. The defences that matter are the unglamorous ones, applied consistently.

So we start with the basics and make sure they're actually in place everywhere rather than mostly: managed antivirus on every device, a firewall configured deliberately rather than left on its defaults, email filtering that catches what gets past Microsoft's own, and multi-factor authentication so a stolen password on its own isn't enough to get in.

What is Cyber Essentials, and do we need it?

It's a UK government-backed scheme covering five basic technical controls — firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patching. You need it if a client, a tender or an insurer asks for it, which is happening more each year. Plenty of businesses pursue it anyway because it forces the basics into place.

Can you help us get certified?

Yes. We assess you against the five controls first and tell you where you currently stand, so you're not paying to fail an assessment. Then we help close the gaps and support you through certification.

Isn't the antivirus that came with our computers enough?

It's better than nothing, but it's unmanaged — nobody is watching whether it's running, up to date, or has flagged something on a machine in the corner. Managed protection is monitored centrally, so a detection on one device is seen and dealt with rather than sitting in a notification nobody opened.

What is multi-factor authentication and do we really need it?

It's the second step after a password — usually a prompt on your phone. It matters because passwords leak constantly through breaches elsewhere, and reused passwords are one of the most common ways businesses get compromised. It's among the highest-value things you can turn on, and it takes minutes per person.

What should we do if we think we've been breached?
